Rhino Hitch guide

Choosing a Drop Hitch for a Lifted Truck

A lift raises your receiver, so the trailer tows nose-down unless the hitch drops the ball to coupler height.

Quick answer

Measure from the ground to the top of your receiver, then to the bottom of your level trailer coupler, with the truck loaded. The difference is your drop. Rhino Hitch lists models with a 7" or 10" maximum drop; choose one whose maximum is at least your measured drop.

A suspension lift or larger tires raise the receiver. If the ball sits higher than the trailer coupler, the trailer tows nose-up or nose-down instead of level, which changes how weight sits on its axles.

Why lifted trucks need more drop

Every inch of lift raises the receiver about the same amount. A trailer that was level behind a stock truck can need several more inches of drop after a lift.

Measure before you buy

  1. Park on level ground with the truck loaded the way you tow.
  2. Measure ground to the top inside edge of the receiver (A).
  3. Level the trailer and measure ground to the bottom of the coupler (B).
  4. Drop needed = A − B.

See How to Measure Hitch Drop for common mistakes.

7" or 10" maximum drop?

Measured dropWhat to consider
Up to 7"A 7" maximum drop model may work. Check that an adjustment position matches your number.
Over 7" up to 10"Look at 10" maximum drop models.
Over 10"Rhino Hitch doesn't list a model with more than 10" of drop. Contact Rhino Hitch for advice.

Ratings still come first

A lift doesn't change what your receiver or vehicle is rated to tow. Your setup is limited by its lowest-rated part. Read Towing Capacity & Tongue Weight.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does a lift kit change my towing capacity?

Check your vehicle maker and lift maker. A hitch can't raise your vehicle's rating.

Should I measure with the truck empty?

Measure the way you normally tow. A loaded bed sits lower.

Is more drop always better?

No. Choose the drop that levels your trailer. Extra length you don't need adds leverage on the receiver.
