Trailer Hitch Receiver Sizes Explained: 2", 2.5" and 3"

Measure the inside of your receiver opening, then match the hitch shank to it.

Updated 2026-10-20 · Rhino Hitch Inc · Facts checked 2026-10-20

Quick answer

Measure the inside of your receiver opening wall to wall. Rhino Hitch makes adjustable hitches for 2", 2.5" and 3" receivers: 2" models are rated 10,000 or 12,000 lb, 2.5" models 14,000 lb and 3" models 16,000 lb.

Your receiver is the square tube under the rear bumper. Its inside opening determines which hitch shank fits.

How to check your receiver size

Measure across the inside of the opening, wall to wall. Common sizes are 1-1/4", 2", 2-1/2" and 3". Many receivers also have the size and rating stamped on a label or plate.

Ratings above come from each Rhino Hitch product listing. Rhino Hitch does not currently offer a 1-1/4" model.

Never use a reducer to "upgrade" a rating

Your setup is limited by its lowest-rated component: vehicle, receiver, hitch, ball, coupler or pin. A larger hitch never raises your vehicle's rating.
