How Adjustable Trailer Hitches Work
Updated 2026-10-20 · Rhino Hitch Inc · Facts checked 2026-10-20
Quick answer
An adjustable trailer hitch lets you change ball height to match each trailer, so you tow level without swapping fixed ball mounts. Set the height, secure it with the adjustment pin or lock, and readjust when your setup changes.
The parts
- Shank: slides into your receiver and is held by the receiver pin.
- Adjustable mount: sets the ball height.
- Ball: each Rhino Hitch listing includes a ball set with a 2" and a 2-5/16" ball.
- Pins and locks: hold the setting and secure the hitch.
Why adjust?
Different trailers have different coupler heights, and trucks sit differently loaded and unloaded. An adjustable hitch lets you re-level without swapping ball mounts.
Securing the setting
Rhino Hitch sells InfiniteRule adjustment locks and replacement pins sized to each rating, and receiver locks for each receiver size.
Adjustable hitch vs fixed ball mount
A fixed ball mount has one drop. If you change trucks, add a lift or tow a trailer at a different height, you need another mount. An adjustable hitch lets you move the ball mount to a different position on the same shank.
Towing more than one trailer
Measure the drop for each trailer. Choose an adjustable hitch whose maximum drop covers the largest one and whose ratings cover the heaviest one. Exact Rhino Hitch adjustment positions are pending confirmation, so check before relying on a specific setting.
