Rhino Hitch guide

Trailer Hitch Ball Sizes Explained

The ball must match the size stamped on your trailer coupler, and its rating must cover your trailer.

Updated 2026-10-20 · Rhino Hitch Inc · Facts checked 2026-10-20

Quick answer

Use the ball size stamped on your trailer coupler. Common sizes are 1-7/8", 2", 2-5/16" and 3". Rhino Hitch hitch listings include a 2" and 2-5/16" ball, and Convert-A-Ball sets are also sold with a 1-7/8" ball.

A ball that's too small for the coupler can pop off. One that's too big won't latch. Always match the coupler.

Find your size

Look on the top or side of the trailer coupler. Most are stamped with the ball size and a rating.

Common ball sizes

Ball sizeTypically used for
1-7/8"Small utility and light trailers
2"Many mid-size utility, boat and camping trailers
2-5/16"Heavier equipment, car haulers and larger trailers
3"Some very heavy trailers

These are common uses, not rules. Your coupler stamp is what counts.

Ball rating

Every ball carries its own rating, usually stamped on the ball. Your setup is limited by the lowest rating among the vehicle, receiver, hitch, ball and coupler.
