Adjustable Trailer Hitch Maintenance

A few minutes of checks before each trip keeps pins sliding freely and catches wear early.

Quick answer

Before each trip, check that pins and clips are seated and undamaged, the ball nut is tight and the ball isn't worn. Rinse off road salt and grit, let the hitch dry, and store it out of the receiver when you're not towing.

Before every trip

  • Pins and clips are fully seated, straight and not cracked.
  • The ball is tight on the mount and shows no flat spots or deep scoring.
  • The receiver pin or lock is in place.

After towing in salt, mud or sand

  • Rinse the hitch and pins with fresh water.
  • Let it dry before storing.
  • Clean grit out of the pin holes so pins slide in fully.

Storage

Removing the hitch when you aren't towing keeps it out of road spray and helps prevent theft.

When to stop and ask

If a pin won't fully seat, a part is bent or cracked, or the ball moves on the mount, don't tow. Contact Rhino Hitch.
